Overview
THE GREATEST MANDALA IN THE WORLD INDONESIA-BOROBUDUR
Located more than 40km from the city of Yogyakarta, the great Buddhist temple of Borobudur was built around 800 AD. The entire architecture of the temple is modeled after the shape of Mount Meru in Hindu mythology, but inside, it worships the Buddha in the form of a Tibetan Tantric Mandala motif, from the lowest to the highest level, conveying the process of spiritual practice from the beginning until the attainment of perfect enlightenment.
This entire temple has about 1,460 extremely vivid stone relief carvings. The three tiers of the temple contain a total of 73 stupas and 505 Buddha statues, along with countless other decorative stone details. Today, Borobudur is recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site and an attractive destination for followers of Vajrayana Buddhism
