Overview
SRI LANKA –RETURN TO A FAIRYTALE LAND
Sri Lanka is a Buddhist holy land with many relics related to the life and career of Gautama Buddha, originating from before the common era. In the 2nd century BCE, the son of King Ashoka, Mahinda, introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka
The Fourth Buddhist Council was held in Sri Lanka. The Buddha, Shakyamuni, left relics behind for humans and celestial beings to revere, and Sri Lanka is honored to still preserve and venerate the relic of the Buddha’s tooth in the Kandy stupa.
Notably, the Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka was propagated directly from the original Bodhi tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. The original Bodhi tree no longer exists today; it was uprooted in the 19th century. The Bodhi tree we see today in Bodh Gaya was, in turn, propagated from the tree in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the Buddha’s footprint still exists in this country, where Buddhism is considered the state religion
